Najib denies saying bumi quotas will go

Josephine: If PM Najib Razak was indeed misquoted, why did he allow the 'wrong' headlines left uncorrected for so many days.

Shouldn't he issue a press statement to clarify that? To say he was misquoted after attending the Umno supreme council meeting does not augur well for his image as the head of the nation.

It is so obvious that Najib is no reformist. His public relations consultant can spruce up his image, but when all his big talk about reforms - about turning Malaysia into the world's best democracy - ended up as just talks, his costly PR makeover will come to nought.

The Umnoputras aren't about to give up the 30 percent quota which is the licence that drives their rent-seeking ways to get rich and for them to 'gasak' the economic and educational opportunities for themselves and their families and cronies.

As long as Umno remains in power, this will not change.

Come out on prime time news, RTM1 and TV3, lights on, tap the microphone twice and say: "Bumi quotas will stay". Or alternatively: "Bumi quotas will end". Where's the problem?

Geronimo: Umno has been warned several times that to keep the NEP or the bumiputera equity quota will be detrimental to the well-being of the Malays in the long run.

So it looks as though this 'never ending policy' will still go on for a long time to come dragging the Malays further back into the backwoods. When it finally come to past, don't say you have not been told because by then, it will be too late.

Eventually, Umno has to answer for its folly.

We clearly heard the news that the government plans to do away with bumi quotas. Do away means abolishing it. I don't know any dictionary that states otherwise.

If yours had said that, then better get rid of it quick. Do not try to please everyone because you will end up pleasing no one. Perhaps this is a sign that your reign as PM is coming to an end.

Rick Teo: The PM must be joking. It was reported in all the media including the mainstream media, and now he has the gall to deny it. This is shocking, he is even worse than Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

It looks like he is going to be the shortest PM in Malaysian history because the people is now aware what type of character he is.

Gerard Samuel Vijayan: What the PM meant was that quotas should go, but they will not go at present. Since Umno is quota obsessed, it will take another 50 years for them to agree to abolish these quotas.

In the meantime, it is only the rich Malays in Umno that will continue to benefit from the abuses, leakages and largesse of the quotas, while the majority of ordinary Malays will remain poor and disadvantaged but contended that they still hold political power in Malaysia. Hardly the recipe for a bright and successful future.

And let's not forget he denied knowing sodomy complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan whom he later admitted to having met over some scholarship, but later also to advise him to lodge a report against Anwar.

When is he telling the truth and when is he denying the truth?

Teoh Hock Aun: It's a shame that after all these years, the majority continues to discriminate against the minority that is struggling so hard to survive.

What fairness, justice and hope is there in Malaysia when the Chinese, Indians, Eurasians, and other non-Malay races are treated like second or third-class citizens in their own country?

In every decent and civilised country, a citizen is treated as a citizen should - having equal rights - but not in Malaysia.

Jedi_Who: So the bumi quota still continues at 30 percent shareholding of companies. At the same time Najib has got investment vehicles like Teraju and others diverting funds to buy companies.

Offshore companies with suspicious shareholdings will be siphoning out our funds slowly. They are now practicing both options instead of one at the expense of the rakyat.

After another five years, they will still say the bumi quota has not been met. It must be Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is tutoring them on "how to be a crook and convince everyone that you are respected and dignified."
