The state government will resume the construction of the Sungai Pinang bridge that was stalled since over a decade ago.

Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said the federal government had set aside an additional allocation of RM8.5 million to get the bridge project going, connecting Chukai with Air Putih and surrounding villages and is expected to benefit 20,000 people.

“Construction is expected to start early next year and to be completed in two years,” he said after visiting the homes of villagers affected by the recent floods in Kemaman.

He added that the previous bridge was built too low and had been frequently submerged in water during flooding.

The state government also plans to increase the elevation of the road from Kampung Paya Pamam leading up to the bridge so it would remain passable even if there were floods in the area.

The road would also serve as an alternative route from Kampung Air Putih to Ibok, via Mardi Pasir Gajah road, before heading towards Chukai, he said.
