Aggrieved parents of alleged police shooting victims still unhappy wth the silence of the authorities brought their grievances to Parliament today to submit a memorandum to the Home Ministry.

Muhammad Hanafi Omar, 22, Muhammad Shamil Hafiz Shapiei, 15, and Mohd Hairul Nizam Tuah, 20, were gunned down by the police after a reportedly high-speed car chase in the early morning of Nov 13 last year, in Glenmarie, Shah Alam.

NONE Accompanied by the representatives of Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) and Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians, the families of three youths appealed to the authorities to charge the officers involved in the killing.

“Although all three victims did not have criminal records, acting Selangor police chief A Thaiveegan has made the incredible claim that all the dead were seasoned criminals,” said the memorandum.

“The police claim that the suspects fled and police gave chase. The suspects then allegedly attacked police and the police opened fire. killing all instantly.

“No suspect in such a situation ever seems to survive. Subsequent to the shooting, police claimed to have discovered weapons in their vehicle and accused the dead of being involved in all sorts of crimes.

azlan “Of course, by then none of them could defend themselves,” said the memorandum.

Muhammad Shamil’s mother Norhafizah Mad Razali, unable to hold back her tears, burst out during the press conference at the Parliament lobby, “Shamil was my eldest son and he was only 15. He used to attend religious classes. Now he is dead.

“I can accept it if the police can show proof that my son had committed a crime but why kill him?” she asked.

PKR vice-president N Surendran said that post-mortem evidence showed that the youths were gunned down by the cops at close range and in a kneeling position .

Surendran, who is also a human rights lawyer, reiterated that this was contrary to the police version of the incident that stated the youths had charged at the authorities with machetes, and were shot during the purported attack.

‘Inconsistent with post-mortem findings’

“This is inconsistent with the post-mortem findings of a 45-degree angle bullet trajectory, indicating the victims were taken into custody and were kneeling before being shot.

“These findings are enough in law to bring murder charges against all the police personnel involved in the shooting,” he said.

azlan LFL representative Fadiah Nadwa Fikri added that the enforcement authorities’ justification that they were charged at by the victims was “disturbing” as similar excuses had been used in “almost every fatal police shooting” recently.

According to her, fatal shooting had increased “17-fold” since 2001 and the police “continue to act in blatant lawlessness”.

Kuala Krai PAS MP Dr Hatta Ramli also said that the autopsy findings clearly showed that the police had “aimed to shoot and kill”, adding that investigation must be conducted.

“The IGP (inspector-general of police) and AG (attorney-general) cannot keep evading us, they have to give us an answer. We have been insisting on this matter since November but we haven’t receive a single response,” said Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai).
