This was the question posed by MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong in the fallout following DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s gaffe over Johor’s crime rate.

tony pua ukec student summit DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua was among Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai’s harshest critics after the latter’s earlier statement - that no tear gas water cannon was shot into the Tung Shin Hospital in Pudu on July 9 - was eventually contradicted by evidence showing otherwise.

Yet, said Wee, Pua’s own party secretary-general denial that he had denigrated Johor over its reputation for crimes was eventually also contradicted -in his case, by an audio recording indicating otherwise.

“I, therefore ask - is Tony Pua going to measure Guan Eng by the same standard as he has measured the health minister and call for Guan Eng’s resignation as Penang Chief Minister and secretary-general of DAP?” asked Wee in a statement.

NONE Liow ( right ), who is vice-president of MCA, had initially denied that anti-riot weapons were discharged at the Tung Shin hospital in Kuala Lumpur during the Bersih 2.0 rally of July 9.

Even in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary from the public, Liow insisted on keeping to the version that he said was fed him by the hospital management.

Liow yesterday apologised for his earlier denial after a high-level Health Ministry probe confirmed that water cannon jet streams and a "smoke bomb" had been discharged in the hospital compound.

Lim , similarly, was forced to apologise for a remark he made in Singapore to foreign correspondents that denigrated Johor for its crime rate.

He had earlier denied making any disparaging statements about the southern state, and has filed a suit demanding an apology from state news agency Bernama .

NONE Bernama had erroneously reported Lim ( left ) as having made the remarks in Australia.

Following the expression of dismay by Johor Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar after it was disclosed on national television that an audio recording indicates Lim had indeed compared Johore unfavourable to Penang over the issue of safety, the chief minister said he wished to “fully apologise” to his majesty and the people of Johor.

“I have no intention whatsoever to discredit Johor or any other state,” he told a press conference on Sept 30.

Liow in his capacity as health minister had ordered an investigation to determine what had really happened during the Tung Shin Hospital incident during the Bersih 2.0 rally in July, Wee recounted.

He had also made public the results of the investigation and was even willing to apologise over his earlier statement for having caused a lot of misunderstanding.

DAP leaders, however, have only sought to criticise others when faced with an embarrassing situation in order to “throw attention” away from their own mistakes.

“Although it is the job of a Member of Parliament to monitor the performance of the Minister, the way Pua has discredited and personally attacked Liow Tiong Lai is unacceptable,” said Wee.
