A youth allegedly attacked a police station housing senior officers with a Molotov cocktail but was arrested immediately afterwards, police said today.

Kuala Lumpur city police chief Dell Akbar Khan downplayed yesterday's incident at the Cheras police station, just south of the capital, adding that no one was injured.

"There is no cause of alarm. We have arrested a 20-year-old suspect. We are interrogating him to find out his objective," he said.

Dell, who attended the gathering of officers breaking their daily Ramadan fast, said the crude device used consisted of burning bamboo containing petrol and a piece of cloth. Attacks on police are rare in Malaysia.

newspaper said a man on a motorcycle rode up to the police station and hurled a machete, shattering the glass window.

"He then made a U-turn and headed towards the exit and threw a Molotov cocktail," Dell was quoted as saying.

The youth managed to flee from the police station before police cornered him in a nearby housing estate.

Police are expected to take the youth to a public hospital for physical and mental examination. - AFP
