A hard hat saved the life of a Bangladeshi worker when a cement platform collapsed at a shopping mall which was still under construction in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur today.

Brickfields police chief Wan Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said fortunately, other workers were not injured in the 11am incident.

"During the incident, the 35-year-old victim was carrying out plastering works on the first floor before the four-metre-high platform collapsed," he told reporters at the scene today.

Wan Bari said it was fortunate that the victim wore a construction hat on duty as he only passed out and received outpatient treatment at the University Malaya Medical Centre.

"The platform, on the first floor of the 11-storey building known as Nu Sentral, was believed to have just been plastered and had not yet dried," said Wan Bari.

He said construction work on the level had been temporarily stopped until further notice from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department senior assistant superistendent Christopher Chong Hon Fah said, they received a call at about 11am, before a fire engine and over 30 firemen were deployed to assist the victim.

"We took an hour to patrol the premises to ensure no other workers were hurt," he said.
