Three hundred students from 11 secondary schools in Kuantan have received a government-sponsored 1Malaysia computer (netbook) each.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (eastern region) director Mohd Shafie Harun said the facility was for students who came from households earning less than RM3,000 a month.
"It is aimed at enhancing their knowledge and assisting them in their studies. We hope they will not misuse it for unhealthy purposes," he said when met after the presentation of the computers at SM Teknik today.
Also present were Teruntum state assemblyman Chang Hong Seong and school principal Idris Abdul Rahim.
Student Norsuhaila Abdullah, 19, said it was commendable of the government to provide the netbook as it would motivate her to study harder.
Another, Yee Wai Ting, 17, said the facility would help students to look for references through the internet.
