A teenage boy was killed after lightning stuck him near his house in Kampung Alor Kumbang, Bukit Jenun in Kedah yesterday evening.

Mohd Helmi Omar, 17, died on the spot under a coconut tree during rain at 6.15pm, his father Omar Daud, 45, told Bernama at Yan Hospital.

Omar said his son had returned home at 5.30 pm after an hour of helping his (Omar’s) brother Abu Bakar, 56, at the padi field.

He went out again at 6pm, when it was still raining, to check on his uncle who was still at the padi field, he said.

“A little later my brother rushed home to inform me that Mohd Helmi had been struck by lightning while standing under a coconut tree,” he said.
