The Selangor police chief should be charged in court for assaulting Bandar Klang DAP assemblyman Teng Chang Khim while trying to evict him from the Selangor state assembly, said a DAP leader today.

The party's deputy chairperson Karpal Singh said for this, the Attorney General's Chambers must first probe into the alleged high handed approach of the Selangor police chief Mohd Noor Hamat last Wednesday.

Teng was dragged out of the state assembly by Mohd Noor and three other police officers after the politician had refused to adhere to orders from the House Speaker to leave.

"Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail must initiate a thorough investigation into the conduct of ACP Mohd Noor Hamat and his officers with a view to their being charged in court," said Karpal in a statement today.

He added that the police have no right to evict Teng from the state assembly and their action was high-handed and illegal.

"They are guilty of using criminal force on Teng. Teng has a right to sue the police for damages for assault," added Karpal, who is also a lawyer.

Treated like a criminal

In the incident on Wednesday, Teng had refused to leave the House after he was suspended by the Speaker of the Selangor state assembly Onn Ismail.

Teng was protesting vehemently over the decision of the Speaker to dismiss his motion to reduce the salary of Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo by RM50..

Following his failure to leave the assembly, the Speaker then summoned the police, as allowed by an amendment to the state assembly standing orders, to enforce his decision.

The police had to drag Teng out of the House and in the process was reported to have prevented reporters from interviewing Teng.

Yesterday Teng told malaysiakini that he wanted the police to apologise to him for treating him as a "No 1 criminal".

"They (also) failed to invoke any laws to back their actions," he added.
