Judging from the response towards the Barisan Nasional (BN) from the Indian voters in Kedah, the MIC is confident it can recapture the Lunas and Bukit Selambau seats in the next general election, Kedah MIC liaison chairperson S Ananthan said today.
He said the MIC has never wavered from its policy of protecting the rights of the Indian community in the country who are now increasingly favouring the party.
The community has warmly welcomed the BN and MIC during events and functions, he added.
“This makes it easier for us to get to know their issues in Kedah,” he said after distributing Deepavali cash gifts to more than 1,700 pupils from three Tamil primary schools.
Accompanied by Umno and MIC committee members, Ananthan and Padang Serai Umno vice-chief Mohd Bakri Hashim visited three Tamil primary schools in the Victoria and Henerita estates in Padang Serai and the Lunas/Wellesly Estate in Lunas to distribute goodies for Deepavali, which falls on next Wednesday.
MIC lost the Lunas and Bukit Selambau seats in the last general election in 2008.
Ananthan said it did not matter which party the Indian voters in these constituencies joined, be it the Indian Progressive Front, People’s Progressive Party or the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress, as long as they supported the BN leadership.
Meanwhile, SRJKT Ladang Lunas/Wellesly parent-teacher association chairman P Parameswaran thanked the federal government for the new three-storey annexe of the school which was completed at the end of last year.
He said the RM1.8-million building can accommodate 840 pupils.
