About 200 people from six non-governmental organisations (NGOs) gathered outside Komtar in George Town today to protest against the banning of water sports activities and the state government’s land acquisition policy.

Carrying placards and blowing whistles and air horns, they gathered at the main entrance of Komtar for 15 minutes before dispersing.

The NGOs involved were Pertubuhan Suara Anak-Anak Malaysia, the Malay right wing group, Perkasa, Persatuan Kebajikan Insan Mulia, Persatuan Kemajuan Insan Malaysia (Kesan), the Penang Traders Association and Badan Bertindak Peniaga India Muslim.

Their spokesperson, Mohamad Ridzuad Mohamad Azudin said the NGOs were not happy with the banning of water sports activities in Batu Feringghi and the land acquisition policy as it suppressed the people.

They also torched the Penang state government pamphlet entitled ‘ 30 Dasar Kerajaan Berjiwa Rakyat ’ (30 policies of government closest to the people’s heart).
