The family of deceased political aide Teoh Beng Hock are anguished over the government’s claim that no charges have been made against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers named in the royal commission of inquiry report as no police report was lodged.

azlan In a heartfelt statement, Teoh’s sister Lee Lan said that this is an act of “double standards” as the family was urged to accept the RCI findings, despite their misgivings, but the results were still not enough for action to be taken.

The report, she said, clearly paints officers Mohd Anuar Ismail as “the bully”, Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus as “the abuser” and Hishamuddin Hashim as “the arrogant leader”.

“The report clearly point out that the three officers...were involved in using inappropriate violence,” said Lee Lan, who said the family is “deeply hurt” by the government’s recent statements.

“However, three months after the report was published, the MACC set up another ‘special task force’ to investigate the three officers... indicating that the government remains suspicious and sceptical of the report.

“We want to know then,  on what basis were we, the grieving family members of the deceased, asked to accept the findings stated in the RCI report, that Beng Hock died of forced suicide?”

She said if further investigations are required, then it is clear that the RCI was a mere charade meant to “take the family for a ride” and that the government is continuing to “drag its feet” in the quest for truth.

Will the police reopen the file?

azlan Lee Lan also asked for the contents of the report on the MACC internal probe, which Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz said was ready, and which was never made made public.

She also demanded that the police and Home Ministry draw out their timeline and procedures, now that Nazri has passed the  “hot potato” to them.

However, she also expressed reservations as the RCI report revealed that initial police investigations were shoddy.

“According to Nazri,  if there is a need to initiate criminal indictment, the police need to reopen investigations on Beng Hock’s death.

We wish to ask, does the police have the inclination to reopen a file on Beng Hock’s death? If the answer is no, does it mean the police are reluctant to seek the truth?

“If they are willing to reopen a file on this matter, we wish to know when they intend to do so and when the investigation can be completed,” she said.
