An opposition leader today claimed that certain quarters were spreading rumours of a snap polls in order to unite a feuding Umno.

In a press statement, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the rumour is aimed at creating a sense of urgency.

"This is an unhealthy attitude as the general election is a serious matter," stressed the opposition leader, who called on Election Commission chairperson Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman to issue an official denial.

According to the rumour circulating since last week, Parliament will be dissolved tomorrow while the elections will be held on Dec 20.

Chinese daily Nanyang Siang Pau carried front-page report about this on Saturday and quoted Abdul Rashid as denying it. Several politicians interviewed also dismissed the possibility of a snap elections.

Still possible

"Despite many quarters thinking this would not take place since it is too hasty, it is still possible if Prime Minister (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) wants it," said Wan Azizah.

She claimed that an early election will be advantageous to Abdullah's as the latter does not have to name his deputy until after the polls and this would unite Umno.

The Keadilan president also reminded the government that it was only fair to give all quarters the necessary time to prepare for the polls.

"In accordance to the democratic practice in almost all countries, the election date should be made known early by giving a sufficient time (for preparation)," she said.
