The Home Ministry will explain accusations that the government is granting citizenship to foreigners in exchange for votes to the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform.

This, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said, would be clarified in detail during a scheduled meeting with the PSC on Nov 2, Malay daily Sinar Harian reported today.

"The Home Ministry will cooperate with the PSC. I am pleased to say that the Home Ministry too wants to see a clean electoral roll," he is quoted as saying.

From 2007 until August 2011, Hishammuddin said, only 27,719 individuals have been granted citizenship.

However, PAS has accused certain 'elements' within the government of perpetrating a syndicate to grant citizenship to foreigners in exchange votes in the next general election.

PAS had earlier this month attempted to a confront group at a resort in Bangi, claiming that some 240 foreigners were being prepped for citizenship.

The Islamic party claimed that this was being systematically done especially in Selangor, similar to Sabah's Project IC that culminated with rogue government officials being detained under the Internal Security Act.
