Members of the public should be allowed to access audited financial reports of political parties submitted to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) said Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament P Kamalanathan.

Kamalanathan, on of the five BN representatives in the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) on Electoral Reforms made the suggestion in his proposal at the second PSC meeting held at the Parliament today.

It was one of the nine initiatives put forward by Kamalanathan which among others touched on four key areas, namely administrative aspects, media access, legislative reforms and structural reforms, aimed to improve the country's electoral system.

Kamalanathan who posted his views in his blog, MY (Malaysian) View's , also suggested that the audited reports of political parties involving election expenses be scrutinised by an independent auditor, while state funding be limited based on size, geographical and population.

He also suggested the campaign period be extended and reforms made to the postal ballot system.

PSC was formed on Oct 3, to look into ways to improve the electoral system in the country and has nine members comprising five BN MPs with Maximus Ongkili as the chairman, Alexander Nanta Linggi, Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, Dr Fong Chan Onn and Kamalanathan.

Three MPs representing the opposition are Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Deputy President Azmin Ali, PAS election director Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli and DAP deputy election director Anthony Loke while Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong represents Independent MPs.
