Nineteen Chinese couples in Kuala Terengganu chose today (Nov 11, 2011), for its auspicious number, 111111, to marry.

They included seven couples who participated in the mass wedding held at the Terengganu Buddhist Association (TBA) building in Kuala Terengganu to re-register their marriage.

Among them were TBA president Wong Choon Kheng and wife, Chia Siew Hoon; vice-chairperson Chong Jun Hwa and his partner, Lee Beng Ong; and secretary-general Soon Gin Leong and wife, Ong Yok Lan.

Present at the function was state Industrial, Trade and Environment Committee chairperson Toh Chin Yaw.

For newly weds entrepreneur Pang Jia Ming, 24, and his 20-year-old wife, Poh Su Ting, an accountant, they had specially chosen today to tie the knot because of its unique date.

Another couple, Lim Beng Thian, 75, and wife, Ong Eng Cheng, 64, who have been married for 37 years, decided to re-register their marriage today because they wanted the "historic" date to be etched on their marriage certificate.

Meanwhile, as of 2pm today, a total of 19 ‘11.11.11' babies, 10 girls and nine boys, had been delivered at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital HSNZ) in Kuala Terangganu.

Terengganu health director, Dr Anwar Sulaiman, said two of the babies were delivered through caesarian section.

In GEORGE TOWN, 232 couples tied their marriage knot today. They included 198 Muslim couples.

Among them were a deaf mute couple, Ng Ka Seong, 34, and Lim Chai Hong, 27. The couple first met at a special school in Tanjung Bungah, about 11 years ago.

“We choose to marry today because a date like today only comes once in 100 years,” Ng said through sign language which was translated by his father, Ng Kooi Kheong, 73.

In KULIM, 17 couples were married in a mass wedding at the Jamiul Makmur Mosque.

The marriage solemnisation was conducted by the Imam Besar of the mosque, Sobri Ismail, and a religious official, Azmi Ahmad.

In SUNGAI PETANI, a mass wedding was organised by the Beng Siew Chinese Welfare Association which involved the participation of 63 couples.
