The mass media campaign to get people to vote should be expanded to attract more young people to register as voters for 13th general election.     

Barisan Nasional Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said advertising via the media like that during the 1970s was unsuitable and could not convey the accurate information to young people.     

"The mass media campaign by the Election Commission must not only be limited to Radio Television Malaysia (RTM). The young are more interested in information communication technology tools like Facebook, Twitter and Astro," he told reporters after opening Selangor Open Futsal 2011 tournament in Subang Jaya today.     

Khairy proposed that the slogan ‘Vote BN’ that seemed to direct people to vote the party be replaced with the slogan 'BN the Choice of the Young Generation’.         

"We respect the people and give them a choice and hopefully they will choose us. We are not forcing them."     

Khairy who is also Umno Youth Chief said the movement has registered 80,000 new voters this year.     

He was also confident that students involved in politics would not neglect their studies as they have a positive attitude.   

"I was active in other fields while at university but I was also focused on academic as it helped me to be more creative and critical.     

"If given the freedom to be active in politics, only a small number of university students will be interested. We can advise them not to neglect their studies," he said after opening central zone Prime Minister's Cup political oratory contest at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam today.     

Khairy was commenting a statement by UiTM Vice-Chancellor Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar that Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) need not be amended.         

Sahol Hamid said that politics in universities would only create disunity among students while their main goal was to gain knowledge for employment to guarantee their future.    

Umno Youth has asked the government to repeal Section 15 of UUCA that prohibit students from engaging or expressing support to any political party.     

Khairy said many students who wanted to join Umno could not do so due to legal constraints and thus could not realise their aspirations.
