'Excessive heavy metals' in 1M'sia chilli sauce

your say Tkc: The best role for the government is to act as a regulator, enforcer and facilitator of a conducive ecosystem for free market enterprise to prosper.

When you micro-manage and get involved in business directly like KR1M (Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia), you are caught in a dilemma - i.e. if you go after the operator, you slap yourself in your face and if you don't, you are seen as supporting the sale of inferior and dangerous products to the unsuspecting rakyat.

With regard to enforcement, it is worth noting that:

1) In China, when a factory was found guilty of adulterating milk and infant formula with melamine (plastic), two perpetrators were executed and a few others were sentenced to long jail imprisonments.

2) In Australia, when a pharmaceutical firm - that supplied 75 percent of the country's health supplement products - decided to maximise profits by cutting corners, they were immediately suspended from operations and their products unceremoniously yanked off the retail shelves overnight.

Can we do it here?

Hidup Rakyats: It was a sad moment to see a project by the BN government, which is suppose to enlighten the cost of living of the poor, has turned out to make them poorer.

In future, these poor rakyat will need to fork out more to seek medication for their sickness, which is caused by 1Malaysia sub-standard products.

Mydin, as one of the prominent hypermarket operators, really disgusted me. They have no shame at all with their ill intention and their greed.

Swipenter: Where is your QC (quality control), Mydin? We can understand that everyone is in business to make profits, otherwise it is not business but charity.

Even then, business must not compromise the health and safety of their consumers. You better buck up your QC and scrutinise your supply chains for safety and quality, otherwise you are guilty of cheating and compromising the health of your customers and that is a unforgivable sin.

Joker: KR1M is a government initiative. The government is providing funds as subsidies/capex (capital expenditure) to the tune of tens if not hundreds of million of the rakyat's money.

What is the Health Ministry and Sirim (Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia) doing? Sleeping as usual?

If Jakim (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia) has been only half as meticulous in checking KR1M goods as they had been in checking non-Muslim premises, they would probably find lots of 'discrepancies' in KR1M items.

Bender: The next step is to find out the entire chain of production involved in the manufacturing of those products.

Where did Mydin get the stuff? Who manufactured it? They could well be brought into this country from abroad (like China) and repackaged here.

And we all know how dangerous it is to consume such products, especially when there have been many cases of poisoning in the past involving such critical products as baby formula and eggs (fake eggs).

Looking at the labeling/packaging alone, I'm not convinced to buy any of those products because I can't really sure where they came from. Sure there's halal logo stamped on the package, but hey, when its comes to Umno-BN, everything is halal in their book.

By selling these dangerous goods to the rakyat which the poor buy because they are cheap, it only lands them in the government hospitals. It will not only destroy the health of the poor but also increase the cost of healthcare for the government.

This is atrocious and cruel. Those responsible must be punished and the goods withdrawn forthwith.

Jiminy Qrikert: PM Najib Razak launched KR1M and there were huge banners of him plastered all over, endorsing 'his' KR1M brainchild.

Maybe he should start using KR1M chilli and tomato sauces too.

Anonymous_3e86: Perhaps the BN government is saying that "a little more iron will be good for your haemaglobin level". Again, the culprit who is fooling the rakyat gets away scot-free.

1M'sia baby milk shelved, chilli sauce stays

Joker: If the SOP (standard operating procedure) is to withdraw the product upon receiving negative feedback, then both the baby milk and chilli sauce should be withdrawn.

After all, Mydin Homamed Holdings Bhd managing director Ameer Ali Mydin himself stated that a new sample is being sent for testing.

If his defense is that the chilli sauce stayed because it has been tested prior to this, then does that mean the baby milk did not go through any testing before it hit the shelf?

Bender: Lab tests from the supplier? If you want to do the test, let an independent body do it, not the supplier.

I may sound a bit paranoid here, but with all the cases of fraud, corruption and such getting off the hook all the time, I'm not convinced that the supplier will be serious enough to do the test rigorously.

They can cheat the test and if anything bad happens as a result, they can almost be sure to get away with it.
