Terengganu Umno liaison committee secretary Zakaria Yusof was killed in an accident along the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan road in Kampung Merchang, Marang early today.

Zakaria, 58, who suffered severe head injuries, died on the spot in the 6.15am crash.

Ahmad said the Kuala Terengganu-bound car driven by Zakaria had gone out of control and collided with a tanker-lorry which came from the opposite direction.

The impact caused Zakaria's car to spin several times before it hit another car behind the tanker. The driver of the tanker-lorry as well as five occupants of the other car escaped injuries.

Returning from a meeting

Zakaria, a former teacher, was the Terengganu Umno secretary since 2001. He was survived by wife, Maznah Abdullah, 58, and four children.

He had also served as the Terengganu Community Development Department (Kemas) deputy director and Terengganu Youth Council vice-president.

Meanwhile, Maznah when met at Kuala Terengganu Hospital said her husband was returning from Paka to their house in Kampung Batu Buruk here after attending a meeting in Dungun last night.

Zakaria's remains would be buried at Tok Pelam Muslim cemetery here this afternoon, she said.
