There will be no disruption to pop icon Elton John’s concert in Genting Highland tonight, after its most vocal critic - Pahang PAS Youth - called off its planned protest against the singer, who is gay.

azlan Youth chief Shahril Azman Abdul Halim said its members have decided not to protest, as they are busy preparing for the next general election.

“In principle, we reject the concert being organised,” Shahril told Malaysiakini .

“However, due to our limitations in several aspects - for we hold dear to what is propagated by the Prophet - that if you cannot use force to prevent such vices or questionable acts ( kemungkaran ), then you should protest with your voice.”

Shahril said several mufti have advised Muslims not to go to the concert.

“We have received information that a group of gay admirers from Thailand is on its way to watch the concert. It is as if Elton John has become a ‘Gay King’ icon here,” he said.

He also expressed worry that there has been an ‘increase’ in programmes catering for the gay community in Pahang, which the authorities appear to have disregarded.

At the end of last year, Shahril said, an event involving transvestites had been held behind closed doors and that several “well known” people were in the audience.
