The floods in Terengganu and Kelantan have forced the evacuation of more people, taking the number of evacuees to 1,674 by this morning.

Some 1,439 people have been evacuated in Terengganu where Setiu is the worst-affected of three districts, said a spokesperson of the Terengganu National Security Council (NSC). The two other districts are Besut and Hulu Terengganu.

A total of 671 people have been evacuated in Setiu, 560 in Besut and 208 in Hulu Terengganu, he said.

The spokesperson said 21 relief centres have been opened, seven of them in Setiu, nine in Besut and five in Hulu Terengganu. The centres are at community halls, multipurpose halls, schools and mosques.

The Terengganu Drainage and Irrigation Department reported that the levels of the major rivers in the state breached the danger point this morning.

A spokesperson said that at 9am the level of the Besut River at Kampung La was 19.54 metres (higher than the danger point of 19.20 metres) and at the Jertih Bridge it was 8.73 metres (8.10 metres).  

The Nerus River was at 13.56 metres (12 metres) in Kampung Bukit and 21.95 metres (21.50 metres) in Kampung Langkap, Setiu.  

The sky is overcast in Terengganu and there is intermittent heavy rain and strong winds.

In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees has risen to 235 from 26 yesterday, with the floods having hit the Kota Baru and Pasir Puteh districts.

A spokesperson of the state flood operations room said Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Awang has been turned into a relief centre in Pasir Puteh.

    

“Two relief centres were opened in Kota Baru, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Mulong and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tiong,” he said.

The levels of four major rivers in Kelantan are reported to be at the alert point while the Golok River has surpassed the warning level in Jenob and Rantau Panjang, he added.
