A court in Sydney has found an Indonesian-born woman guilty of being an accessory after the fact to her son’s murder of her Malaysian lover in an “honour killing”.   

Nita Iskandar, 47, had pleaded not guilty to the charge, which related to helping her 21-year-old son Andrew Iskandar flee to Singapore the day after the killing of her lover Mohd Shah Saemin, a driver at the Malaysian consulate in Sydney, the Australian Associated Press reports.  

But the New South Wales Supreme Court jury found Nita, also an employee at the Malaysian consulate, guilty today.  

Justice David Davies continued Nita’s bail and adjourned her sentencing hearing to Feb 2. Andrew’s sentencing hearing is scheduled on the same day.   

Yesterday, Andrew was found guilty of murdering Mohd Shah, 43, outside his unit at Leichhardt, in Sydney’s inner west, at about midnight on Feb 21, 2010.

The crown alleged the “honour killing” was planned between Andrew and his father after the affair became a talking point among Sydney’s Indonesian community.  

A witness described Mohd Shah being attacked with a hammer “like a piece of meat”.
