Some 200 people of Kampung Jong Berlabuh in Jerantut are living in fear of what they believe to be a tiger on the prowl in their village.

According to the villagers, the tiger has killed at least eight of their cows and four goats in the past month.

One villager, Wan Nordin Wan Mustaffar, 77, estimated their loss at RM13,000.

The villagers are certain the culprit is a tiger as they have come across remnants of carcasses which the predator had dragged into the nearby jungle.

Besides fearing for their own safety, the villagers are worried that more of their livestock may be killed by the tiger unless it was stopped.

“We have built an enclosure to keep our livestock to prevent the tiger from getting at them,” said Wan Nordin.

Meanwhile, Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department director Khairiah Mohd Sharif said the department would send its personnel to the village, and advised the villagers not to go after the animal themselves.
