The proposed repeal of Section 15 of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) will allow Umno to enter local universities, says a Perak delegate.

Unlike PAS, Umno is law abiding, said Mohammad Annuar Ariffin.

"PAS may have rammed through into universities to influence students to take part in politics or related activities, before the Act was amended (to bar students from politics), and spread lies and slander," Annuar said.

"However, this proposed repeal of a section of the UUCA will allow Umno to enter campuses of local universities and attract students to participate in and join Umno. Hence, we have to seize this opportunity," he said.

Annuar also pointed out that Section 15 of the UUCA has six sub-sections and the landmark Court of Appeal decision only affected one sub-section.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has announced that despite proposing to repeal Section 15 of the Act, the government would still appeal the Court of Appeal decision that it is unconstitutional.

On Oct 31, the appellate court ruled that Section 15 (5) (a) of the UUCA, which bars university students from involvement in politics, was unconstitutional .

This was made in a majority decision by a three-member panel that allowed an appeal by four former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia students.
