DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang said former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zaid Ibrahim was spot-on to point out the dangerous trend in Malaysia’s politics during the recently concluded Umno annual general meeting.

Lim said the speeches aired truly make nonsense of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s calls of 1Malaysia, New Economic Model and proposal for a “Global Movement of Moderates”.

“Has Najib decided to cancel 'the Global Movement of the Moderates' initiative? The speeches at the Umno annual general meeting are completely  antithetical to any acceptable definition or concept of 'moderates'.”

 

Putting out a challenge, Lim said Najib should conduct a public poll whether he is perceived by Malaysians as speaking for 1Malaysia and for all Malaysians, as well as whether he is speaking as a “moderate”,  following his party presidential address.

 

The Ipoh Timor MP said Najib’s deputy Muhyiddin Yassin should also conduct a poll on whether he is considered an extremist and racist in his speech at the joint general assemblies of  its three movements.  

“If the race-baiting and incitement of religious hatred and tensions by Umno leaders and delegates had taken place at opposition conferences, the police would have already hauled up opposition leaders and delegates for committing crimes of sedition and other offences,” quipped Lim.

They, especially Najib and Muhyiddin, are guilty of the height of irresponsibility when they led other Umno leaders in playing on race, religion, and Malay rulers while falsely accusing the DAP of being anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-Malay rulers,” he said, adding that this was manifested further in Najib’s speech at a Pekida function.

 

Lim asked whether Umno possessed any national leaders prepared to put nation before party and self .

“Do they dare to step forward and draw the line like Zaid to condemn the playing of the 3Rs -  race, religion and Malay rulers?” asked the veteran politician.
