Mercury and lead levels in chilli sauce sold at the 1Malaysia People’s Shop (KR1M) are at the permitted levels under the Food Regulations 1985.

According to a statement issued by the Health Ministry, the results were obtained from an analysis performed on samples of sauces sold at the KR1M after complaints from the Malaysian Association of Standards Users (Standards Users).

The sampling was done after a news portal reported that the  Malaysian Association of Standards Users had claimed that their research showed that the sauce contained high levels of heavy metals.

“The Health Ministry has also been carrying out continuous monitoring of chilli sauce in the local market. From 2004 until October 2011, a total of 50 chili samples were analysed for metal, lead and cadmium,” said the statement.

According to the statement, the ministry had always given priority to health matters and will not compromise on food safety.
