The ‘hudud’ laws approved by the previous PAS-led Terengganu government are contrary to Islam, Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said today.  

Several points in the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Law (Hudud and Qisas) Enactment 2002 are contrary to Islam, including on the question of sodomy, he said, adding that several of these weaknesses have to be rectified.  

“It is not that we do not want the implementation of hudud laws, but the process of implementation still requires time,” he said when winding-up debate on the state budget 2012 which he tabled in the state assembly on Monday.

Earlier, state Religion and Information Committee chairperson Khazan Che Mat  said the government acknowledged that much needs to be done before the enactment can be implemented.

Meanwhile, the assembly approved several bills, including the Supply Bill 2012, the Supplementary Supply Bill 2012, Malay Reserve Land (Amendment) (No 2) Bill 2011 and the Malay Reserve Land (Amendment) (No 3) Bill 2011.

The assembly adjourned sine die .
