The police's forensic division in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department will carry out an investigation into the fire at Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) headquarters in Kuching early today.

Kuching police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong told Bernama that police were awaiting further reports on the incident.

The fire was believed to have started from the party's meeting room located on the ground floor of the building at about 3.50am, causing minor damage.

Thirteen firemen and two fire engines were deployed to the scene and managed to put out the fire by 5am.

SUPP secretary-general Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was among those first to arrive at the scene, said the party would leave the matter to the Fire and Rescue Department and police to investigate.

The headquarters was used for the 24th SUPP central committee meeting last weekend.
