All 196 victims from the Pengkalan Atap Hardcore Poor Housing Project (PPRT) in Kuala Besut who were relocated following high tide and big waves, were sent home this morning.

Besut deputy police chief DSP Noor Zainy Mohd Noor said the residents were moved to the village community hall on Sunday and given the green light to go home beginning 10am today.

“We found that the high tide and big waves were under control last night, but monitoring still continues. Should the situation become dangerous, residents will need to relocate again immediately,” he told Bernama when contacted today.

Fifty-seven men, 65 women, 44 boys and 30 girls from 41 families evacuated their homes, located 400 metres from the sea, when they became flooded by between 0.3 and 0.8 metres of water.

Meanwhile, a survey by Bernama to the housing area found that the high tide expected to recur last night was unlike the first incident.

Until 1am, the tide was only moderate compared to the four-metre high waves which tore down the land embankment there on Sunday.
