The Dewan Negara today approved a motion revoking the emergency proclamations of 1966, 1969 and 1977.

The 1969 emergency proclamation was issued on May 15, 1969, following racial riots two days earlier.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong, when tabling the motion, said the emergency proclamations were being revoked because there no longer existed any situation which threatened security, economic life or public order in the country.

He said the revocation would deem null and void, within six months hence, all ordinances issued when the emergency proclamations were in force.

Liew said the revocation of the emergency proclamations reflected the government’s readiness to reform laws to make them relevant to current needs and strengthen efforts to ensure that the country remained progressive.

The Dewan Rakyat approved the motion revoking the three emergency proclamations after it was tabled on Nov 24 by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
