The Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KRIM) will be made available at all public universities nationwide.
The concept store is the brainchild of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak aimed at providing the masses low-priced but quality products to beat the high cost of living.
Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Universiti Malaya was the first university to have a KRIM outlet on its premises.
"Universiti Malaya is also the first public university to offer the Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia (MR1M), an initiative by the government to reduce cost of living," he told reporters after the prime minister opened a KRIM outlet and MR1M cafeteria at the country's oldest university.
The high-quality menu comprises breakfast and lunch and is sold at affordable prices.
"Next year, cafeterias at 17 public universities will sell the MRIM menu," he added.
Besides calling at the shop, operated at the university's cooperative shop, Najib also had a meal of "teh tarik" and "roti canai" for RM2 as per the breakfast menu of the 1Malaysia Menu.
Najib was greeted on arrival at the university by Ismail Sabri and deputy minister Tan Lian Hoe.
As he had his evening tea, the prime minister chatted with the 300 or so students who came a-calling at the cooperative shop.
Najib's visit is seen as recognition for the sale of KR1M products and 1Malaysia menu food at institutions of higher learning, enabling students to enjoy the goods at fair prices.
The KR1M pioneer project was launched by the prime minister at the Kelana Jaya LRT station in Selangor on June 22. The target is to open 85 such premises throughout the country by the end of 2012, all of them selling up to 250 types of essential goods under the 1Malaysia brand.
The prices of the goods are between 30 and 50 per cent lower than similar goods of other brands.
