Perlis mufti Juanda Jaya has slammed the National Registration Department (NRD) for its inconvenient processes, that he personally faced while registering a new identity card for his daughter.

The vocal mufti complained that he faced numerous challenges when he tried to obtain an IC for his second child, 12, at Wisma Persekutuan Sarawak in Kuching, this morning.

"How can it be that my child has a birth certificate and a passport, but cannot get an IC?" asked the mufti.

Juanda was also asked to produce his marriage certificate as proof of marriage to his wife, an Indonesian citizen.

"The officer at the counter said this is a new procedure, but why is this procedure not listed on the notice board?

"He said according to the procedure, those married to foreign citizens had to produce a marriage certificate.

"But this was not mentioned in the guide (for registration)," Juanda told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

Confusion in computerised age

He added that when the officer called the marriage certificate department, he said Juanda's document did not exist.

Juanda said the department should inform the public about the procedures and explain the need for them.

"This matter causes a lot of inconvenience especially for those from out of town who have no information (about the necessary requirements)," he said.

He questioned why NRD could not share information with the Immigration Department, which issued his daughter's passport.

"Why is the information not linked, when everything is now computerised?"

"The government should be making things easier (for the rakyat)."
