The situation in flood-hit areas in Sarawak, Pahang, Johor and Sabah has improved, with a reduction in the number of evacuees as at 6pm.

Sarawak has the most number of evacuees among the four states, at 2,938. The evacuees, from 772 families in five divisions, are being accommodated at 11 relief centres.

The state’s acting deputy chairperson of the Disaster Aid and Management Committee, Misnu Taha, gave the breakdown of evacuees in the five divisions as follows: 1,333 in Samarahan, 958 in Kuching, 539 in Sibu, 102 in Sri Aman and six in Sarikei.

“The situation now is a little better than three days ago. (However) rain is expected to fall until Dec 30,” he told reporters in Kuching.

Misnu said several roads were still under water. They are Jalan Pengkalan Pantu, Jalan Sembau/Stumbin and Julau/Entabai.

In KUANTAN, a spokesperson of the Pahang Police Flood Operations Room said only

one relief centre remains open with 15 people from three families.

He said they were being housed at the Kampung Gadak community hall as their houses in Kampung Gadak were flooded.

“The 52 people from 14 families housed at the Teluk Gading Hall have been allowed to return to their homes after the floodwaters subsided,” he said.

In JOHOR BARU, the National Security Council portal reported that the number of evacuees has dropped to 715 from 1,075 this morning.

All of them are being accommodated at 11 relief centres, seven of them in Segamat, three in Mersing and one in Batu Pahat, it said.

The seven centres in Segamat are at Kampung Batu Badak, Kampung Sanglang, Kampung Pogoh, Kampung Tandong, Kampung Mensudut Pindah, Kampung Kuala Paya and Kampung Spangloi. 

The three centres in Mersing are at the Endau Farmers Organisation, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Endau and Kampung Tanah Abang (Transit Jemaluang) while the centre in Batu Pahat is at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandan.  

561 in Kudat return to their homes

In KOTA KINABALU, all the 561 people in Kudat evacuated last night returned to their homes today, said District Fire & Rescue Station chief Jamaludin Hussin.

“The Fire & Rescue squad, with the assistance of the police, had evacuated the people from Kampung Korina, Kampung Narandang and Kampung Andap Jawa to the Sikuati Hall at 8.30pm yesterday when floodwaters rose up to 2.2 metres in the villages.

“The rain stopped at about midnight and the evacuees began to return to their homes in stages up to 10.30am today,” he said in a statement.
