Johor PAS has decided to contest in six fewer seats in the state in the next general election and let the DAP and PKR contest in those constituencies, Johor PAS deputy commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad said today.   

“The seats to be handed over to the DAP and PKR are areas with mixed populations and the two other parties (of the opposition pact) are strong there,” he told Bernama .

It contested in nine parliamentary and 33 state seats in the last general election, in 2008.

He said that in 2008, Johor PAS contested in many areas because Johor PKR was not strong then and also because it did not want BN to have easy victories.

In 2008, Johor PAS won two state seats, Maharani and Sungai Abong.

On the chances of Johor PAS in the 13th general election, Dzulkifli said the current political situation in the country favoured the opposition pact and predicted that it would break the BN’s hold on Johor.

“We are confident when there is a level-playing field. The opposition pact can win at least 29 state seats in Johor and garner a simple majority to form the state government,” he said.

Johor, which is a BN stronghold, has 26 parliamentary and 56 state seats.

Dzulkifli said the list of Johor PAS candidates for the 13th general election is ready, but it has yet to be approved by the party’s central leadership.

“However, the candidates have been informed and they have started working in their respective constituencies,” he said.
