The opposition must take full responsibility and guarantee its planned gathering on Monday was carried out peacefully, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the onus was on the opposition to ensure security and prevent damage to public property.

The gathering was allowed in line with the spirit of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011, but at the same time, the organiser should abide by police directive,  he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said this after attending a gathering in Pagoh near Muar today.

Yesterday, the Kuala Lumpur police allowed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters to gather at the parking lot of the Jalan Duta Court Complex.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh and Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Azmin Ali.

Nevertheless, Muhyiddin was confident the police would act to ensure order in the event the situation on Monday went out of control.

The deputy prime minister noted that although the gathering was allowed, it was still an attempt to interfere with the judiciary.

Based on its decision to hold the gathering, Muhyiddin said the opposition was only keen to fight for the dignity of an individual.

On Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s claim that the opposition could recapture Perak and win one-third of the seats in Johor in the coming general election, he said Lim could make any forecast he wished.

However, the decision, ultimately, was with the people, said Muhyiddin.
