Industrial output in Malaysia rose 13.5 percent on year in December and was up 3.5 percent from the previous month, due to positive growth in all sectors, the Statistics Department said today.

This led to industrial output for the full year in 2003 expanding 9.2 percent year-on-year, the department said in a statement.

"The expansion was in line with the positive change of all sectors - the manufacturing, electricity and mining," it said.

According to data released last month, industrial output rose 11.7 percent year-on-year in November and expanded 8.8 percent in the 11 months to November

Manufacturing sector

Output rose 13.5 percent year-on-year in December due to a 15.8 percent growth in the manufacturing sector index, 10.5 percent expansion in electricity and 3.6 percent rise in mining.

For the fourth quarter to December, output expanded 12.2 percent year-on-year, with the manufacturing sector index gaining 15.2 percent, electricity growing 5.6 percent and mining rising 1.3 percent.

Compared with the third quarter, fourth quarter industrial output grew 3.6 percent.

For the full-year 2003, the output rose 9.2 percent on the back of a 10.3 percent gain in the manufacturing sector index, 5.8 percent rise in electricity and 5.4 percent expansion in mining, the department said. - AFP
