Anwar ruling shows courts are free, says Rais

your say Ruben: Information minister Rais Yatim, as usual you are talking rubbish. First and foremost, just ask the ordinary rakyat if Anwar Ibrahim should have even been charged in the first place.

Like so many more intelligent people have said, there shouldn't have been a case in the first place and we believe the government, judiciary, police, etc, had used all the power in their hands to find him guilty.

Even the judge was often bias during the course of the trial. But the writing was already on the wall with regards to the anger that was brewing among the rakyat, and the government knew it had gone too far. Shame on you, Rais, for taking credit for this.

Vijay47: If the courts had indeed been free, this case would have never reached this stage; the charges would have thrown out almost as soon as they were laid.

Right from the very start, every action by the prosecution defied every concept of fair and just application of the law. Such travesties are too numerous to be listed here and in any case, unnecessary to a nation quite familiar with them.

Perhaps a few examples would refresh Rais' failing memory - a university dropout being counselled by the prime minister, and tea-for-two with the police at the Concorde Hotel before complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan made his allegations.

No, Rais, this one decision does not prove that the judiciary has ‘changed its mode'. Considering the quality of the evidence, any decision other than acquittal would have been too much to swallow even in Malaysia.

When Pakatan Rakyat rolls into Putrajaya soon, many public institutions and personalities will have numerous questions to answer. But do not feel neglected, Rais, you will be one of them.

Karma: What a cheap shot from the person who once wrote a doctoral thesis criticising the executive abusing its powers. Come on Rais Yatim, as a lawyer in this country, you know better.

Since you are also in the executive, you have no right to comment about the fairness of the judiciary. Only we as normal citizens can do so.

Further, only a few years ago an RCI (royal commission of inquiry) said our judiciary was not fair with its findings that six VIPs should be charged in court for fixing the appointment of judges.

Rais should know better because he was in the opposition before. Since his return to Umno, the judiciary has not improved.

Cannon: If our judiciary is free, how come justice sucks in this land? Mohamad Khir Toyo, the ex-MB of Selangor, gets 12 months for graft, whereas a shampoo thief in Johor Bahru gets jailed for 24 months and a Terengganu thief, who stole RM20, gets 36 months of jail time?

The cooked-up case against Anwar should have been thrown out of court from day one. Our judiciary had been complicit in playing up to Umno's game in dragging Anwar through the coals for nearly two years with the purpose of causing him maximum damage and destroying his political ambitions. Anwar's acquittal is a triumph of people's power.

Good men: Independent judiciary? Don't make me laugh. More like BN realised that the electorate isn't buying the crap they are trying to sell, and the whole sodomy fiasco is working against them so they want to put it behind them as quickly as possible, and extricate themselves from this filthy mess before the 13th GE.

The backlash in the polls if Anwar had been found guilty on such flimsy and concocted ‘evidence', would have been severe and decisive.

This verdict, from BN's point of view, is their least worst option. Any option is bad for them, this was the least bad.

Wira: One swallow doesn't a summer make. Umno must have weighed the pros and cons and decided that to avoid a backlash that would spoil their plan to continue feeding the corrupt in their party.

49boybum: We have an information minister whose primary function is to misinform the general public. So this statement is no surprise in the constant flow of misinformation from this unscrupulous minister who still believes that the rakyat are gullible enough to listen to him.

It is pathetic that we the rakyat have to endure such incompetent governance. Let's all together put an end to this plundering, arrogant and incompetent government.

Ksn: Rais, is that all you can conclude from the Anwar verdict? For someone with a PhD in law, such generalisations as to pass judgement about the judiciary being free is childish.

Have you read ‘Mayday for Justice' by Salleh Abas and K Das? There will only be a free judiciary when Pakatan takes over the government.

Thinking: What a joke, our courts are free because of this one case. I can remember so many cases where the courts had been biassed in favour of BN. I am waiting for BN-Umno to appeal this case at the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.

I think this is just a ploy to create a ‘just' image of BN before the GE. After the GE and if BN wins, the appeal I believe will come.

Gerard Samuel Vijayan: Whether the judiciary is free or not is yet to be seen, but the mainstream media especially TV3, RTM1 and 2, Utusan Malaysia , Berita Harian and the New Straits Times are certainly not.

Rather than allowing the trial to take its course, they have spent months demonising and vilifying Anwar to the point that even the devil was considered to be the lesser evil in Malaysia.

The presumption of innocence was ignored. Was that fair and ethical journalism? Where was Rais then? The rakyat know what to do come GE13 and Rais will be the first to lose his job.
