Thirteen deaths were recorded on the third day of the 25th Ops Sikap yesterday, bringing the number of road accident fatalities since the operation began on Monday, to 39.

The police website reported four more deaths yesterday as compared to the second day, with motorists making up most of the fatalities.

Those who perished yesterday involved eight motorists, three motorcyclists and two pedestrians.

A total of 21,199 summonses were issued for various traffic offences, mostly for speeding, overtaking at double line, running traffic lights and driving on the emergency lane.

There were 1,198 accidents reported yesterday, with those occurring on municipal roads recording the highest at 433 cases, followed by state roads (283), federal roads (282), highways (78) and 122 on other roads.

The ongoing traffic police operation which will end on Jan 30, was launched in conjunction with the Chinese New Year to educate motorists and motorcyclists to exercise care and reduce road fatalities during the festive season.
