Eight deaths were recorded on the fourth day of the ‘Ops Sikap’ exercise to reduce road accidents during the Chinese New Year festive period, raising the four-day toll to 47, according to the police website.  

Three motorcyclists were among the dead while the rest were a cyclist and a pedestrian and one person each in a car, van and bus, it said.

The website said 1,110 road accidents were reported yesterday, with municipal roads having the highest number of 381 followed by state roads (291), federal roads (236), highways (126) and other roads (76).

A total of 20,829 summonses were also issued to traffic offenders, it added.
