The People's Progressive Party (PPP) has described as baseless a report in a Tamil daily today that its president M Kayveas had held a discussion with Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over its intention to join the opposition pact.

PPP information chief A Chandrakumanan said the report carried by Makkal Osai was a slander and deliberate lies to mislead the people and the newspaper had since admitted its mistake and would publish an apology.

"This is a dirty tactic to hoodwink us as they see our party runs efficiently despite not represented in the cabinet," he told reporters after launching the Ponggal festival organised by the Federal Territory PPP in Kuala Lumpur today.

Chandrakumanan, who is also Federal Territory PPP chairman, said the report had actually capitalised on a chance meeting between Anwar and Kayveas at an airport six years ago and not a secret meeting as it was made out to be by the newspaper.

He said the PPP planned to make a police report on the matter and write to the Home Ministry.
