Police detained 24 men for cockfight gambling not far from the Sandakan police headquarters in a raid last Sunday.

Sandakan police chief ACP Rowell Marong said the 5.10pm raid was conducted on a large covered area which served as a cockfighting ring at the Public Works Department quarters.

Besides arresting the men aged between 25 and 60, police also confiscated various equipment used in the activity namely seven fighting cocks and cages, tables, chairs, weighing machine and a camera, he said in Sandakan today.

Rowell said the operation named Ops Dadu , headed by ASP Shahranjeit Singh following public tip-offs, aimed to curb illegal gambling activities in the district.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(a) of the Animal Cruelty Minor Offences Ordinance.
