The Abolish Internal Security Act Movement (AIM) has expressed its disappointment over the new two-year detention order slapped on six ISA detainees on Saturday.

Its chairperson Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh urged the home ministry to review its decision and release the six immediately.

"Why were they further detained? Can we examine the reasons?" he asked in a statement.

Syed Ibrahim said the uncertainty of the detention period is a gross violation of human rights against the ISA detainees.

The six are Ahmad Yani Ismail, Abdul Samad Shukri Mohd, Abdul Razak Baharudin, Mohd Sha Sarijan, Ahmad Sajuli Abd Rahman and Suhaimi Mokhtar. They were arrested two years ago over alleged links to the regional terror group, the Jemaah Islamiah (JI).

Their detention order expired on Saturday but were extended for another two years via an order signed by Home Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also the prime minister.

It turned out to be a double blow for Ahmad Yani and Abdul Samad whose habeas corpus applications were also rejected by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday.

Detainee outraged

The 82-member AIM lamented that the government has ignored the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia and the home ministry's advisory board recommendations to release the ISA detainees.

Syed Ibrahim also criticised the government for being unconcern about the trauma suffered by the detainees' families.

In a related development, Norlaila Othman from the ISA detainees' families support group said one of the six detainees has expressed his outrage over the new detention order.

She told malaysiakini that Mohd Sha has refused to sign the new detention order when the document was served on him on Saturday's night.

Norlaila claimed that a Kamunting detention camp official known only as "Tuan Azmi" told Mohd Sha that he was being further detained because "he needs to be further rehabilitated".

Meanwhile, AIM coordinator Badaruddin Ismail when contacted said some 40 people turned up near the Kamunting detention camp on Saturday to welcome the 'release' of the six.

Among them were Parti Sosialis Malaysia pro tem vice-president Dr D Jeyakumar, PAS leaders and family members of the detainees

The group gathered there from morning till evening. Children present was kept occupied with a colouring contest organised for them, all under a close watch from the police personnel posted there.

The police also manned roadblock at several entries near the camp, Badaruddin said.

The detention for another group of seven ISA detainees - Shukry Omar Talib, Muhamad Faiq Hafidh, Shahrial Sirin, Mohammed Kadar, Abdullah Daud Muhamad Ismail Anuawarul and Sharil Hat - will expire this Friday.
