A mysterious disfigurement on taxi driver Baharuddin Ahmad’s lips and conflicting information from his autopsy aroused his family’s suspicions as to his actual cause of death during last year’s Bersih 2.0 electoral reform rally.

“I saw my late father in the resuscitation room and his lips did not look normal to me. It was sumbing (disfigured) on the upper left lip,” Kuala Lumpur Hospital houseman Ummi Mirza Baharuddin, who is the taxi driver’s daughter, told the inquest into his death today.

NONE This contradicted with the briefing given by the on-call forensic pathologist after conducting the autopsy.

She said that the expert denied anything abnormal with the deceased’s lips.

This was despite her own observation of the body, as well as the autopsy photos produced in court where she pointed put the disfigurement.

She related how another medical doctor who assisted during the autopsy also admitted that according to the autopsy findings, one of Baharuddin’s teeth was freshly broken.

Ummi pointed to another inconsistency of the briefing given to the family and what was actually written in the report with regard to the condition of Baharuddin’s lungs.

“Lungs looks good, healthy,” was what the expert told them, according to her.

This she said, contradicted the full autopsy report which stated that there is “congestion” in the lungs.

Such contradictions, she offered, raised speculations that the actual cause of death may also be suspect.

Ummi also related how doubts were also raised when they were asked to sign a letter absolving police of any culpability in Baharuddin’s death if they wanted to collect the body without submitting to an autopsy.

Testifying before Coroner Zulkpli Abdullah at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court on the second day of the inquiry, Ummi was the fifth witness called thus far.

She was the last of the witnesses from Baharuddin’s family to be called, prior to the inquest breaking for lunch.

Witnesses from the police are to be called before the coroner in the afternoon session.
