Those who have claimed that a surging apostasy movement in Malaysia is threatening the faith of Muslims should reveal the names of the 300 purported apostates and their addresses, so that they can be saved, said former Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

NONE “We don’t deny that there are attempts to attract Muslim to other religions, but (Himpun)’s statements that hundreds of Muslims have been apostate are dangerous,” he was quoted as saying in a Sinar Harian report today.

“I challenge (Himpun) to reveal the names of the 300 (individuals) and their addresses so that we can trace them down and determine if the allegations are correct or if this is merely a political stunt to divert attention.”

Himpun rally organising chief Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid, however, did not take up Asri’s challenge, saying that revealing the names would harm the individuals’ sense of security.

“Let the information be kept in the investigation department,” he said.

He also claimed that information on the purported apostates had been obtained through public complaints and from government agencies.
