Teoh Beng Hock’s brother filed an appeal today against the Dec 1 High Court decision which rejected his family’s application to review the coroner’s open verdict on the death of the political aide.      

Teoh Meng Kee filed the appeal at the High Court Registrar in Shah Alam at 2.45pm, through his lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, following a grant of leave to do so from the Court of Appeal on Feb 2.  

The three-man Court of Appeal panel led by Sulaiman Daud had unanimously concurred with Gobind Singh’s submission that the court needed to scrutinise certain points of law in the case.

On Jan 5, 2011, coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas returned an open verdict that Beng Hock’s death in 2009 was not due to suicide or murder and found no third party involvement either.     

Prior to that, on July 21, 2011 a royal commission of inquiry headed by Federal Court judge James Foong Cheng Yuen concluded that Beng Hock had committed suicide.    

On July 16, 2009, Teoh Beng Hock, 30, political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyperson and Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, after being interrogated at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office located on the 14th floor of the building.
