MCA said it was unfair for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to send the Election Commission (EC) on a wild goose chase by asking the commission to probe the rise in number of registered voters in Selangor.

The party said the EC has been taking steps to clean up the electoral role by tracking down inactive users and displaying over 42,000 dubious names for the voters to be verified as well as adopting the use of indelible ink.

“Anwar’s statement is also presumptuous, as he is already assuming that any rise of voters in Pakatan Rakyat (opposition pact PKR-DAP-PAS) constituencies are to be considered ‘phantom voters’, and are part of an imaginary plot to wrest Selangor from Pakatan Rakyat.

“Has Anwar also forgotten the voter registration campaigns, launched by  both political parties and non-governmental organisations, across the political divide of which Pakatan was aggressive in getting people who have reached voting age to register?” said MCA Selangor secretary Wong Koon Moon in a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur.

Instead of crying foul, he said Anwar should be happy that the exercise was  yielding results and it was hypocritical to raise the red flag over something which has not yet been proven.

Anwar, in a report carried by a news portal on Monday had called for a probe by the EC into the rise in number of registered voters in Selangor, particularly in the constituencies of Subang, Kota Raja and Puchong, that are currently held by elected representatives from PKR.
