The development of Bandar Malaysia is on track with the latest progress being the agreement on eight relocation sites for the current military and police installations at the old Sungai Besi air base.

Strategic development company, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), will develop the new sites for the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF), Royal Artillery Regiment (31 RAD) and the Royal Malaysia Police Air Wing, said 1MDB.

IMDB will develop Bandar Malaysia on a 200ha site on Sungai Besi Airport land.

Five sites are for the relocation of RMAF operations at the Kuala Lumpur air force base in Subang, Kuantan, Sendayan, Butterworth and Gong Kedak, - two for the Royal Malaysia Police (Subang and Ipoh) and one for 31 RAD in Kajang, it said in a statement.

The agreements for the development of the Butterworth and Gong Kedak sites for RMAF were signed in December last year while the agreement for the Ipoh site for the Royal Malaysia Police was inked last month.

The rest were signed today by Defence Ministry secretary-general Dr Ismail Ahmad, Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (management) Wahab Mohd Yasin and 1MDB chief executive officer Shahrol Halmi.

The relocation process will be in phases upon completion of works at the new bases within the next five years.

Bandar Malaysia aims to promote livability as a distinctive character of Greater Kuala Lumpur. It will be a mixed development filled with livable space for work and life balance such as open green space, people’s avenue and world-class tertiary learning institutions.

This is the third game-changing use of the historical site. In 1956, it served as the first international airport, opening up the aviation, travel, tourism and hospitality industries.

It was also the birthplace of the RMAF which has now grown to become an ultra-modern air force.
