The Election Commission (EC) will not carry out a redelineation of electoral boundaries until the 13th general election has been held, said its chairperson, Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

He said the decision was made as the EC wanted to concentrate fully on efforts to ensure a smooth general election.

“It will not be carried out. The EC does not have many staff and we don’t have the capacity to undertake both these major tasks simultaneously, namely the general election and redelineation. So, currently the EC focus is on the general election.

“If it (redelineation) is carried out, it must be completed within two years. We don’t want a situation where if we carry out the redelineation exercise, the Parliament is suddenly dissolved and this will pose a problem,” he said when contacted by Bernam a in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said the redelineation exercise, which had been considered for implementation for the past two years, would only be held after the coming general election.

According to Article 113 (2) of the federal constitution, eight years after the expiry of the last redelineation of electoral boundaries on March 21 last year, a new redelineation exercise can be carried out.
