The Hougang parliamentary seat is now vacant, following a decision by its member of parliament Yaw Shin Leong not to appeal against his expulsion from the Workers Party (WP).

In a statement today, Singapore speaker of parliament Michael Palmer said the clerk of parliament received a letter from Yaw on Feb 20, stating he would not appeal against his expulsion from WP.

“In view of the above, and pursuant to Article 46(2)(b) of the constitution, the seat of the Member for Hougang is vacant from the date of his expulsion from the political party, for which he stood in the 2011 general election, that is, Feb 14, 2012,” he said.
