Opposition leaders heading the 'Black 14' memorandum delegation, including Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, have entered the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) headquarters at Menara Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

A growing crowd of more than 3,000 people were mostly sitting on the pavement outside the building, carrying red placards that stated ' Kekalkan Hak Asasi Manusia ' (Preserve Human Rights) and ' Bebaskan Media ' (Free The Media).

Copies of the memorandum were also distributed to those gathered while reformasi leader Abd Malek Hussin read out its content through a loud speaker.

The situation was reported to be calm and some 100 police personnel with two water cannon trucks were stationed there. The police have yet to make any moves to break up the gathering.

Three representatives from the Bar Council, who were monitoring the gathering, were also seen in the vicinity, sporting white armbands.

Thousands greet arrival of human rights petitioners

LIVE! At 10.15am, Keadilan leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail arrived at the Suhakam headquarters in the city centre in a convoy from her house in Bukit Damansara.

She was accompanied by a number of Barisan Alternatif leaders. Among them were PRM's Dr Syed Husin Ali, DAP's Teresa Kok and PAS' Dr Mohd Hatta Mohd Ramli.

The delegation was greeted by a crowd of about 3,000, which swelled from around 300 earlier this morning. More people could be seen streaming in from other areas.

Key reformasi leader Abd Malek Hussin spoke to the crowd through a loudhailer. He told everyone to sit down and to hold a doa (prayers) while waiting for the delegation to emerge from the Suhakam headquarters.

Small crowd gathers outside Suhakam

LIVE! A small crowd of 300 people have gathered outside the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) headquarters in Menara Tun Razak, Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur, this morning to wait for the arrival of Barisan Alternatif leaders.

About 300 police personnel were deployed around the area, along with a water cannon truck.

The BA leaders and a small delegation of non-government organisations, led by Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, are expected to hand over a memorandum on human rights to Suhakam.

Leaflets urging the opposition supporters to remain calm were handed out. "We come here for a peaceful gathering. Do not get involved in any fight or commotion. If anyone creates trouble, apprehend him and hand him over to the police," it said.

It also told the reformasi activists not to get into fights with the riot police and Special Branch officers.
